چکیده

INTRODUCTION Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder of type I collagen that results in bone fragility. This fragility is believed to stem from a combination of bone mass deficiency and compromised bone material properties [13]. Little data, however, is yet available to describe bone material properties in individuals with OI. This study presents the first characterization of bone material strength and toughness in children with OI.

Decreased collagen organization and content are associated with reduced strength of demineralized and intact bone in the SAMP6 mouse.

UNLABELLED To examine the link between bone material properties and skeletal fragility, we analyzed the mechanical, histological, biochemical, and spectroscopic properties of bones from a murine model of skeletal fragility (SAMP6). Intact bones from SAMP6 mice are weak and brittle compared with SAMR1 controls, a defect attributed to reduced strength of the bone matrix. The matrix weakness is at...

Brittle Bone Fracture Risk with Transverse Isotropy

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable bone fragility disorder characterized by skeletal deformity and “brittle” bones. This fragility is believed to stem from a combination of bone mass deficiency and compromised bone material properties [1-3]. Poor bone quality poses major orthopaedic and rehabilitation challenges. Risk of fracture is a major consideration when prescribing activity restr...

Meso-scale Modeling of Tension Analysis of Pure and Intra-ply Hybrid Woven Composites Using Finite Element Method

One of the key issues associated with using of composites in various applications is their tensile behavior. The tensile behavior of a composite material is strongly influenced by the properties of its constituents and their distribution. This paper focuses on gaining some insights into the tensile process of pure and hybrid woven composite reinforced with brittle and ductile yarns. For this pu...

Cortical Tissue Porosity of Brittle Osteogenesis Imperfecta Bone

INTRODUCTION There is currently no cure for the skeletal dysplasia osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a debilitating disease that occurs in approximately 1 in every 20,000 human births. OI is caused by a genetic mutation that results in brittle bones and many fractures. In a mouse model of the disease, oim, we have characterized bone structure using X-ray microtomography, and found that oim bone has...

Multi-scale analysis of bone chemistry, morphology and mechanics in the oim model of osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a congenital disease commonly characterized by brittle bones and caused by mutations in the genes encoding Type I collagen, the single most abundant protein produced by the body. The oim model has a natural collagen mutation, converting its heterotrimeric structure (two α1 and one α2 chains) into α1 homotrimers. This mutation in collagen may impact formation of the mi...
